Administration

Side effects

• Common: Dry mouth, decreased blood pressure, slow heart rate, nausea, vomiting, restlessness, and fever.
• Less common: Hallucinations, reduced heart function, cardiac arrest, abdominal swelling, and thirst.
• Serious: Chest pain.
• Hyperthermia or fever: Dextomid may induce hyperthermia, which may require discontinuation and monitoring.
• Withdrawal symptoms: Patients may experience withdrawal symptoms like agitation, nausea, and vomiting within 48 hours after stopping the medication. 

Precautions

• Heart problems: Dextomid should be used with caution in patients with heart conditions, especially those with heart rhythm disorders, abnormally slow heart rate, or low blood pressure.
• Liver or kidney problems: Dose adjustments or close monitoring may be necessary in patients with severe kidney or liver problems.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Dextomid is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless absolutely necessary. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and risks before prescribing it.
• Interactions with other medications: Dextomid can interact with other sedatives, pain medications, and blood pressure medications. Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking.
